Project summary

The Brazil nut tree (Bertholletia excelsa) provides one of the most socio-economically important non-timber tropical forest products – the Brazil nut. This research focuses on the ecology of the species under natural conditions, aiming to shed light on the underlying mechanisms of Brazil nut regeneration and population dynamics at a local scale. Using a combination of direct observations, field experiments and laboratory experiments, we seek to inform the sustainable harvest of Brazil nuts in natural populations in the future and attempt to construct a management plan that can be adopted by Brazil nut collectors across the region
