Resumo do projeto

O tema desta pesquisa é o efeito ecológico de incêndios em florestas pluviais tropicais. Investigamos como a biota das florestas tropicais responde a incêndios de baixa intensidade (no subosque) e de incêndios frequëntes de alta intensidade, a um e três anos depois do evento. Estes estudos foram os primeiros a quantificar as conseqüências de queimadas para a avifauna do subosque (Barlow et al. 2002, Barlow & Peres 2004a, 2004b) e para os vertebrados de médio e grande porte (Barlow & Peres 2006), além de permitir uma quantificação das mudanças de curto prazo na estrutura da vegetação florestal (Haugaasen et al. 2003). Uma colaboração com outros projetos amazônicos levou à primeira comparação quantitativa entre os efeitos imediatos de incêndios florestais e o corte seletivo e fragmenta
ção (Barlow et al. 2006).
