Project summary
Using a novel and objective indicator selection procedure we identified three high performance indicator taxa (dung-beetles, birds and large mammals) to evalutate the long-term sustainability of “sustainable forest management” (SFM). Logging is widely seen as the most profitable economic activity that is able to maintain native forest cover, and enormous areas (>50 Million hectares) of the Amazon have been earmarked as National Forests suitable for SFM programs. Yet the long-term sustainability of reduced-impact logging practices is poorly known. We are using a powerful before-after impact experiemntal design, examing forest plots before they are logged, and then evaluating the impacts of the logging at regular intervals over time. This long-term study covers a range of soil types and topology, and uses large blocks of unlogged forests as controls.
