Médio Juruá
Community-based sustainable management of forest resources in Amazonian extractive reserves
Project summaryExtractive and sustainable development reserves are increasing in number and aggregate area across tropical forest regions. Yet there is little understanding of how sustainable current harvests of forest and freshwater resources actually are. Extractive activities include hunting, fishing, and the collection of tree oils and various other plant products with medicinal or cosmetic properties, and sustain the basic livelihoods of a growing population of nontribal Amazonians.
The project is based in two contiguous reserves along the Rio Juruá, Amazonas: the Uacari Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS) and the Médio Juruá Extractive Reserve (ResEx). Our research uses household interviews to record extractive levels for timber, all non-timber forest products (NTFPs), hunting, and fishing, in addition to an assessment of agricultural activities. We also conduct surveys to assess game abundance, fruit productivity and the distribution of key NTFP resources, as well as research into the potential impacts of extractive activities on the community ecology of várzea and terra firme forests.
Ultimately this project aims to develop, in partnership with our collaborating institutions in Brazil, a sustainable co-management protocol to inform the sustainable use of game vertebrates and other non-timber forest products by rural communities throughout the Brazilian Amazon.
